Cala Luna the most beautiful beach of Sardinia

With its crystal-clear turquoise waters and pristine sandy beach, Cala Luna is truly a paradise on earth. Whether you’re seeking relaxation, adventure, or simply an escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, this enchanting destination will captivate your senses and leave you in awe. From how to get there to exploring nearby attractions like Cala Gonone, let’s embark on a virtual journey to experience the magic of Cala Luna!

What is Cala Luna

Cala Luna is an amazing beach, situated midway between the charming towns of Baunei and Dorgali. Cala Luna graces the Gulf of Orosei and stands as a symbol of the island’s magnificence. Just a quick online search under “Sardinia,” and you’ll immediately be captivated by the azure embrace of the sea meeting the rugged cliffs in the photos. With its crystal-clear waters, pristine white sands, and majestic rock formations, Cala Luna ranks among the most exquisite destinations in all of Sardinia.

As you step onto the shores of Cala Luna, prepare to be mesmerized by its pristine beauty. The beach stretches out before you like a picture-perfect postcard come to life. Soft, powdery sand tickles your toes as you stroll along the shoreline, feeling the warmth of the sun on your skin.

The area has a bar (with a slightly more expensive menu) and even showers. Besides the gorgeous beach, there are lots of hiking opportunities and a small pier for a boat which take you here from Cala Gonome, Santa Maria Navarese or Arbatax.

How to get to Cala Luna

Getting to Cala Luna is an adventure in itself, filled with stunning views and exciting journeys. The beach is located on the east coast of Sardinia, surrounded by rugged cliffs and crystal-clear turquoise waters. To reach this hidden gem, there are a few different options available.

One way to get to Cala Luna is by hiking along the scenic coastal path from the nearby town Cala Gonome. This hike takes you through breathtaking landscapes, including limestone plateaus and lush Mediterranean vegetation. Along the way, you’ll encounter impressive rock formations and panoramic viewpoints that will leave you in awe.

The hiking trail, however, is quite challenging, marked by steep inclines, rocky terrain, and can be a bit tough to navigate. I strongly advise wearing sturdy boots and ensuring you have an ample supply of water. The trek from Cala Gonome to Cala Luna typically takes about 3 hours, while the return journey is comparatively easier and can be completed in roughly half the time.

Starting right from the parking area, you’ll notice the striking Cala Fuili rock, which offers its own share of beauty if you decide not to venture to Cala Luna. A short distance away, there’s another tiny beach, though it tends to get quite crowded.

If hiking isn’t your thing, don’t worry! Another option is to take a boat tour from one of the neighbouring ports – Cala Gonome, Santa Maria Navarrese or, for example, Arbatax. While the boats are great, they go back before the sunset which is a shame.

The beautiful sunrise

If you are a bit of an adventurer and have time, sleep on the beach. Now this isn’t allowed but is normally practised. I would recommend being in a lager group, just in case. The sunset and sunrise are beautiful and you will definitely not regret seeing them. You will also be on the beach without tourists who will arrive at eleven by a boat. The beach then gets quite crowded but is definitely worth the hype!

Before we talk about the Cala Gonome, consider reading about other beautiful beaches such as Capo Testa, Argentiera, La Pelosa (Stintino) or Asinara National Park.

Cala Gonome

With its picturesque landscapes and rich cultural heritage, this charming village is an ideal destination for travelers seeking an authentic Italian experience.

One of the most impressive historical sites in Gala Gonome is the ancient Roman amphitheater. Standing strong after all these years, it offers a glimpse into the past and allows visitors to imagine what life was like during those times. The intricate architecture and grandeur of this structure are truly awe-inspiring.

The town also celebrates its cultural heritage through various festivals throughout the year. One such festival is the Festival of Lights, where locals come together to illuminate the streets with vibrant lanterns and celebrate their traditions with music, dance, and delicious food.

As you wander through the charming streets lined with historic buildings, you will feel a sense of connection to those who came before us. The stories etched into every corner remind us of our shared human experience across time.

Cala Gonome is an amazing town but can get a little too touristy. The harbour is a great place for some fresh food and good news is the local supermarket is also opened on Sundays.
