Bosa – the colourful and charming city on the coast

Today´s destination is Bosa, a colourful and incredibly charming city on the western coast, with a perfect panorama and tiny streets. The city that has a beach nearby and will want you to come back.

Welcome to this picturesque town, nestled on the western coast of Sardinia. This hidden gem is a true delight for those seeking an authentic Italian experience off the beaten path. Steeped in history and brimming with charm, Bosa offers a wealth of attractions that will leave you awe-struck. From its enchanting old town to its sun-kissed beaches, there is something here for everyone.

Bosa Sardinia

With a history dating back over a thousand years, Bosa has played a significant role in the island’s past. The town’s narrow, winding streets are lined with colorful pastel houses that cascade down the hillside towards the Temo River. The most iconic landmark is the medieval Malaspina Castle, perched high above the town, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Historically, Bosa has been a center for fishing, agriculture, and tanning, with its unique tanneries still in operation today.

The town’s history is rich and storied, with influences from Phoenicians, Romans, and medieval rulers. Bosa’s charming atmosphere, historical architecture, and proximity to both the sea and the rugged Sardinian countryside make it a delightful destination for visitors seeking a glimpse into the island’s past and its stunning natural beauty.

Sightseeing in Bosa

Sightseeing in Bosa is an absolute delight. The town is brimming with historical and cultural landmarks that will leave you awe-struck. From ancient churches to arched bridges, there’s something for everyone to explore. It’s very similar to Castelsardo, yet so different.

Bosa is one of the most beautiful cities I have visited in Sardinia, in the 15th century she was even giving a title of a royal city. There is a river, and a lovely bridge and the city on the hill. Bosa has its own atmosphere and small hidden places that will surprise you.

A small church just by the bridge is our first place to visit before we walk up the hill to the former castle. It’s called Church of San Pietro Extramuros, and dates back to the 11th century. Its stunning Romanesque architecture and intricate frescoes are a sight to behold. The castle or what’s remained of is has a perfect view of the city, the sea, and the river. I promise you will just stop and stare and won´t be able to understand how this place could have been built.

Bosa is one of the places you shouldn´t miss when being in Sardinia. I know I say that a lot in my articles about Sardinia, but I mean. The entrance to the castle is just 4 euros and you will get a guide where you can read all about the history. There is a small “gallery” as well as some strange, yet interesting paintings.

Another must-see attraction is the Tannery Museum, where you can learn about Bosa’s rich leatherworking heritage. Take a guided tour and discover how traditional tanning techniques have been passed down through generations.

Don’t forget to stroll along the colorful streets of Sa Costa district, known for its vibrant houses painted in warm shades of orange and yellow. Capture some Instagram-worthy photos while immersing yourself in the charming atmosphere.

Bosa Marina

Nestled along the western coast of Sardinia lies the charming seaside town of Bosa Marina. With its pristine beaches, vibrant promenade, and stunning sunsets, it’s no wonder that this hidden gem has become a favorite destination for travelers seeking a tranquil coastal escape.

As you wander through Bosa Marina’s picturesque streets, lined with colorful houses and quaint cafes, you’ll find yourself immersed in its laid-back atmosphere. Stop by one of the local seafood restaurants and indulge in freshly caught fish dishes while enjoying panoramic views of the sea.

The beach and windsurfing

Bosa offers a beach as well, not as nice as some others, but there is a different kind of sand. You can try windsurfing, paddle boarding and swim in the sea, which is in the morning quiet and in the evening full of waves. It is about half hour from the city, and when walking through the town, you will be able to walk most of the way in the shadow.

Small bars, restaurants, almost no shops, but an incredibly charming city with a lovely atmosphere – definitely the next city you should visit. Or maybe the next city should be Alghero? Only one way to find out.
